Thank You from our Director

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on all that has occurred in the last couple months, I wanted to take the time to thank ALL of you who put so much love and time into your child’s life.  It warms my heart to see family units strengthened while working together toward a common goal.  I pray that through the process you were able to learn new skills and gain new friendships while working together as a team.

With the help of my artistic team, it was exciting to see the vision that we created become reality on stage.  As I wandered around the theater, I could see how each team had contributed details to perfectly capture the theme of our show.  Throughout the process I sometimes wonder how things would get accomplished.  It always amazes me how everyone pulls together to ensure that we have a successful run.  I was truly blessed by all the hard work and dedication each of you sacrificed for the success of this show.

I cannot express how exciting and honored it was to see your children perform during rehearsals and on the stage.  As a Director, they brought so much joy to my heart.  I love talking to patrons after shows that express how amazed they were at our talent.  One common question I receive is… “Do you have any children in the cast?” to which I always reply… “Yes!, 93 of them!”  Each member of the cast and crew has a special place in my heart.  As a Director, I have to make difficult decisions that are not always popular or met with favor.  When working with children, I try to ensure that each one is treated fairly and that they know how special they are.  I sincerely hope that you know that my role as a Director will never surpass that of loving your kids that you have entrusted to me for this show.

Now that our work is finished, we say good-bye with sad yet grateful hearts.  Thanks for your inspiring dedication and tremendous example to “my kids”.  Words cannot convey my gratitude for your tremendous contribution.  It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with all of you and to meet many of our new CYT families.  I look forward to working together again on future productions.

You are doing such a wonderful job on your parent committees to make The Little Mermaid such a success.  Thank you so much for all you do. The show would not go on without you.

We will be thanking our wonderful Artistic Team for their terrific job at the Strike Party.  Each member of the Artistic Team will be receiving a gift card from the parents to show our gratitude. If you have not taken the opportunity to contribute to the Artistic's Teams thank you gifts, tonight is your last chance. There will be an envelope in the Magic Box at Vancouver Classes/Showcase at Crossroads Community Church.  Remember either cash or checks payable to Vicky Dillion may be placed in the envelope.

GREAT WAY TO SUPPORT CYT!

Green Room REMINDERS and Missing Curtain Call

With such a large cast with and lots of new actors, please be especially careful about your cast and crew responsibilities of the Greenroom. Based on last night, we would have had at least ten cast/crew that would have lost curtain call - most were given a warning.

Offenses were typically costumes on the floor, hangers and other personal items left out, eating during Act 1 and/or 2 (only allowed during intermission), not paying attention to show progress (almost missing queues), and general talking too loudly in the Greenroom and just outside the backstage door. Hopefully an ounce of prevention will help here.

Green Room
Rules, regulations and reminders

Bring only water for drinking in all show areas.
Eating is only allowed at intermission and between shows.
No chocolate or chewing gum is allowed.
Students must wear cover-ups (knee-length, zip up, button snap or tie – not
one you have to pull over your heads) when eating and applying make-up.
No electronic devices are allowed including cell phones, video games, iPods
and mp3 players.
Bring homework or other quiet activities when you are not on stage.
Place your show buddy notes/gifts in the designated area when you arrive at each show.
Clean your area (put make-up and street clothes in your box) prior to Circle Up.
All conversations must be kept down to a whisper while the show is in
progress. Only quiet activities are allowed.
You are responsible to listen for your cues.
Take care of your costume after the show.
Obey Green Room Parents and staff.
AFTER THE SHOW
Cast members have 15 minutes after curtain to greet people.
Head down to the Green Room and quickly return your costume and clean up
your area. You have 15 minutes to do this. If you need more time, you need to
skip the greeting time.
IF YOU DO NOT ADHERE TO ANY OF THESE RULES, YOU WILL MISS THE NEXT
CURTAIN CALL.

Big changes for ‘Little Mermaid’

Christian Youth Theater production features new characters, songs

Janelle Harriman, 16, gets her makeup done during a rehearsal for
“The Little Mermaid.” Harriman will play the part of Cha-Cha the
Lobster.
Janelle Harriman, 16, gets her makeup done during a rehearsal for “The Little Mermaid.” Harriman will play the part of Cha-Cha the Lobster.

Christian Youth Theater’s production of “The Little Mermaid,” starring Aimee Hogan, 16, as Ariel and Collin Carver, 17, as Prince Eric, depicts the story of a young mermaid who longs to be part of the human world.
In the midst of a shipwreck, Ariel rescues Prince Eric and falls in love with him. Ariel’s desire to be with the prince convinces her to trade her voice for legs. Her father, King Neptune, played by 17-year-old Ethan Morrow, must sacrifice his title as king to his sister Octavia, the sea witch. Much trouble and heartache is endured for the young mermaid to learn her lesson and attain her happy ending.
“There are a lot of different messages. One of the biggest is for parents to listen to their kids because it’s important we’re invested in their lives. If our kids have something to tell us, then it’s important that we listen,” Director Jeff McHenry said. “It’s also about forgiveness. Ariel had to forgive herself, and a father had to forgive his daughter.”
The family-themed musical also reflects CYT’s goal of family involvement in its productions.
CYT, founded in 1981 in San Diego, aims to develop character in children ages 4 to 18 through training in the arts via after-school programs and by producing wholesome family entertainment.
CYT offers theater arts classes for children every fall, winter and spring session that teach and train enrolled students in drama, voice, dance and other areas of arts and entertainment. Students ages 8 to 18 are encouraged to audition for roles in productions.
“All of our productions are a joint family adventure,” Vancouver Coordinator Lynette Carver said. “This is how we’re able to develop productions is such a short time.”
Parents are responsible for building sets and designing costumes while kids are responsible for spotlights, lighting, backstage work and acting.
“Our kids are working hard to make sure this is their production,” Carver said.
A cast and crew of 93 kids younger than 18 years old are gearing up to bring the tale of the Little Mermaid to stage at Fort Vancouver High School’s auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 and continuing through Nov. 14.
With opening night fast approaching, families came together to wrap up preparations that began in late September.
“The Little Mermaid” fans have memorized Ariel’s lobster friend Sebastian’s tune “Under the Sea” and her guppy friend’s constant reminders in “Part of Your World,” but this production will surprise audiences with all new songs and different characters.
Along with a new king and sea witch, in place of Sebastian is Cha Cha the lobster, and Flounder is replaced by Guppy.
McHenry, who has directed and choreographed previous CYT productions such as “Annie,” “Aladdin,” and “Sound of Music,” oversaw the construction of new song lyrics and orchestration of the musical numbers.
Songs include “What’s Your Name?” “I Can’t Believe My Eyes,” “May I Have This Dance?” “That Voice” and “At the Bottom of the Sea.”
“The costuming and makeup is incredible,” McHenry said. “I’ve never worked with a show with such specialized effects. The kids are all trained for this.”
The show is expected to run for approximately one hour and 45 minutes with an intermission.
Because the theater only seats approximately 480 guests, CYT encourages audiences to purchase tickets online in advance.
“It’s going to be a fun show,” McHenry said. “It’s not only for kids, but there’s also a great message for adults as well. We just hope to provide a good show and entertainment.”

REHEARSAL DINNERS are provided for your convenience during dress rehearsal week, and between the two Saturday and school day shows.  Meals will be $3.50 each and MUST be pre-ordered with your coupon.  Meals do not include a drink; please make sure your child has a reusable water bottle in his/her costume box.   If your child has a hearty appetite, feel free to order more than one meal.  Also, if any family members will be present during these times and would like to eat, please order their meals with a coupon as well.

FLOWER ORDERS- If you would like to have flowers waiting for you at the souvenir stand on opening night you can be order them with the coupon.

CLOSING STRIKE PARTY will be held in the cafeteria at Fort Vancouver High School after the closing show on November 14th.  Everyone is invited; cast, crew, family and friends!  There is no charge to attend the Strike Party.  If you would like to join us for dinner the cost is $6.00 per person: (baked and fried) chicken, salad, breadsticks, dessert and drinks. The coupon for ordering these meals is due at our meeting on Friday.

Program & Congrats Ads

The Little Mermaid Program Committee has been able to give us until class time on Thursday to turn in advertisements.

So, if you have an Advertisement you would like to place
you can still email the information to wildstanley@aol.com
or bring it to classes and place it in the Magic Box.

If you forgot to turn in your Congrats Ads please
send them to Darby Stringer at darbyStringer@gmail.com or the Stanley's at wildstanley@aol.com.

We still have room for ads, and they are a critical part of providing a quality program.

Please, let's make a final push to bring in those ads, so that we can not only provide an excellent Little Mermaid program but also support CYT Vanport.

Cinderella

Dear LM Families,

You may have noticed that our show and Cinderella are running at the same weekend. Our opportunity to support our Portland friends is their Thursday School Day Shows at 9:30 and 11:45am. Here is the link to get Tickets.

CONGRATS and PERSONAL ADS

New Opportunity:
Have a CYT Friend or family member with Little Mermaid
as their last show? Do you know of a birthday or anniversary
during the run of the show? Do you just want to send someone
a big Thank You?
You could always place a nice congrat ad in the program for $5
but even better get creative and place a personal advertisement in the program for 30% off list price and make a real statement.
Just let a member of your program committee know what you would like, and we can make it happen.

Clean-up Schedule

Hello Little Mermaid Families,

The Green Room Committee is in the process of finalizing the clean-up schedule for dress rehearsal week and performance days. Each cast and crew member is assigned a time to help clean our rented facility at least once. If you are carpooling with another family and would like to have your child scheduled on the same day as another, please e-mail Cheri and I by this Sunday evening, October 17th. It is our desire to have the clean-up schedule finalized and available next Friday’s parent meeting.

Thanks very much for your help and we're looking forward to a wonderful show!

Most sincerely,

Kevin and Cheri Hogan
